If you’re enrolled in Medicare, you’ve likely received something in the mail called an Explanation of Benefits, or EOB. While it may look like a bill, it’s actually a statement of services, and it plays an important role in helping you track your healthcare costs and spot potential errors or fraud.

At Legacy From The Heart in Tulsa, we know these forms can be confusing. Here are some simple tricks to help you better understand your Medicare EOBs and make sure you’re only paying what you truly owe.

Trick #1: Know What an EOB Is (and Isn’t)

An EOB is not a bill. It’s a summary of healthcare services you received, how much your provider charged, what Medicare or your plan paid, and how much you may owe. You’ll typically receive EOBs if you have:

  • A Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C)
  • A Part D Prescription Drug Plan

If you have Original Medicare, you’ll receive a Medicare Summary Notice (MSN) instead of similar information in a different format.

Trick #2: Understand the Layout

EOBs may vary by insurance company, but they usually include:

  • Service Date – When the care was provided
  • Provider Name – The doctor or facility that performed the service
  • Service Description – What procedure, test, or service was done
  • Amount Billed – What your provider charged
  • Amount Allowed – What your plan agreed to pay
  • Plan Payment – What Medicare or your plan actually paid
  • You May Owe – Your estimated out-of-pocket costs

Look at each section carefully; errors are more common than you might think.

Trick #3: Match EOBs with Your Records

Keep a simple health care journal, or save receipts and appointment notes. Then, compare your EOBs to your personal records. If a service appears on your EOB that you don’t recognize, follow up.

Trick #4: Don’t Ignore “You May Owe” Amounts

While an EOB is not a bill, the “You May Owe” section signals what might appear on an actual bill from your provider. Contact your provider directly to confirm and pay only when you receive an official invoice.

Trick #5: Ask for Help
